Public IP Vulnerability Assessment

What is a Public IP?

Every device that connects to the Internet gets assigned an IP (Internet Protocol) address. Some are STATIC, and some are DYNAMIC. You only need to be concerned with securing static public IPs.

STATIC Public IP addresses enable website servers, email servers, and remote access gateways, essentially any system that needs to communicate with customers, vendors, or remote employees to be found, because they always use the same IP address.

DYNAMIC public IP addresses change when you connect to a different Internet access point; for example, a Smartphone travelling across town or internationally will get assigned a new DYNAMIC address each time it connects to an Internet provider.

Just as anyone can find a store by its street address, anyone, including cybercriminals, can find your network by its static public IP address.

The challenge is that these same addresses that enable your business operations are also visible to cybercriminals scanning the internet for vulnerable targets. Without these public-facing IPs, your business would be isolated; however, as with a physical building, these entry points can have weaknesses.

Our goal is to ensure that people can see in the “windows”, but the ‘doors’ to the sales floor or warehouse are securely locked and monitored, so that only authorized individuals can enter and leave with the contents.

What’s a public IP VA?

A VA is a vulnerability assessment that reports on the security status of your public IP address.

With this information, you can resolve security issues before criminals drop by and use it as a launchpad for an attack on your organization.

Your public IPs are always visible externally, so they are the first targets attackers seek and are constantly being scanned by automated tools criminals use to find easy targets.

Ignoring your public IPs is like leaving the front door of your office unlocked, day and night. When you leave your public IPs unassessed, you leave yourself open to exploitation, which can lead to a cyberattack.

This risk isn't just a hypothetical scenario; the vast majority of vulnerabilities stem from unpatched third-party applications or misconfigurations.

Consider a scenario where a ransomware group finds an unpatched vulnerability in your customer portal through your IP and encrypts your entire database, shutting down operations for weeks.

The question isn't whether your public IPs will be targeted; they'll be scanned hundreds, if not thousands, of times every day, constantly looking for new vulnerabilities that can be used against you.

The cost of downtime, regulatory fines, and lost trust can often dwarf the investment required for proactive assessments, a real false economy. Having a continuous monitoring program gives you peace of mind while systems around you, out of your control, are constantly being updated.
